Mercado Municipal Olhão
One of the big advantages of a holiday home in the Algarve is that you have your own kitchen. Every time we are in the Algarve we look forward to cooking with all fresh products. There is a lot of fishing in the Algarve, and from Monte Gordo to Lagos you can buy fresh fish on a local market. The largest and most famous market is in Olhão.
The Mercado Municipal can be recognised by the red bricks it is built with. The market building was built in 1915 and renovated in 1997. The Mercado Municipal consists of two market halls. One is for fruit and vegetables and the other is entirely for everything that comes from the sea. On Saturdays, the area around the Mercado Municipal is also filled with local suppliers of olives, nuts and cheeses.
The Saturday market in Olhão
Start your Saturday morning with a bica (espresso) and a Pastel de Nata in the square in Olhão and watch the queue at the entrance to the Mercado Municipal on the fish market side. It is always crowded here, especially on Saturdays, but don't worry, the offer is very extensive and there is more than enough. Bear in mind that you will have to search for a parking space.
One market hall is filled with fruit and vegetables. Here you will find all kinds of local fresh products. You can also find flowers, dried fruit, meat, nuts and Portuguese sweets here. The locals also come here to do their shopping.
The second market is the fish market. Olhão's fish market is the largest and most interesting fish market in the Algarve.
