Houses Algarve-West

By the Algarve West we mean the part of the Algarve on the left side of Faro. This includes for instance Lagos, Portimão, Sagres, Alvor, Albufeira, Vilamoura and Monchique. The west coast of the Algarve is best known for its high cliffs and beautiful rock formations.

Hiking in Algarve West

The west coast of the Algarve is perfect for wonderful hikes. For example, you can walk through the Ria Formosa Natural Park, or follow a walking path over the high cliffs. There are hikes for every level.

It is also possible to walk long distances, such as the Via Algarviana. This route runs from east to west through the Algarve, and has a total length of 300 km.

Albufeira and Vilamoura

Albufeira is a real seaside resort, located just 45 km from the center of Faro. In summer you will often find young party animals here, who have fun in the many clubs. However, Albufeira is also a beautiful city, which has been around since prehistoric times. Besides the beaches, the churches in the city are worth a visit. Furthermore, various excursions are organized, such as a jeep safari, wine tour and a boat trip to the Benagil caves.

Vilamoura is a constructed recreation resort with a beautiful marina, located between Faro and Albufeira. Construction on this started in 1974, and the place is still expanding. You will find a full range of excellent hotels, holiday resorts, restaurants and casinos.

Lagos and Sagres

Further to the southwest of the Algarve lies Lagos and Sagres. Lagos is the old capital of the Algarve, and still a fishing town. In the Golden Age, the city was a true maritime center, where slaves were unfortunately also traded. A commemorative plaque on the site of the oldest slave market in Europe is all that reminds you of this time. There are not many hotels in the city, which means that Lagos has managed to retain its authentic character.

Sagres is the most southwestern point in Europe, and used to be seen as the end of the world. Now it is a nature reserve with a high lighthouse. Sagres is less suitable for a sun holiday, although there are beaches, there is often a high current and a lot of wind. Visit Fortaleza de Sagres, which is a real attraction due to its unique location by the sea.

Boat trip in the west of the Algarve

Of course, a boat trip along the imposing cliffs should not be missed. Frequently visited places are the Benagil caves and the rock formations at Ponte da Piedade. The boats depart from the various seaside resorts such as Albufeira, Lagos and Portimão. In addition to the cliffs, it is also possible to join a boat trip that is specifically aimed at spotting dolphins. Common dolphins are most commonly spotted here, but with a bit of luck you can also spot bottlenose dolphins, porpoises, whales and even killer whales!

Serra de Monchique

When you go inland you will notice that it is a lot quieter here than the popular seaside resorts. A nice place to visit is the mountain town of Monchique. Here lies the Serra de Monchique, a green oasis. On the hills there are cork oaks, fruit trees and eucalyptus. Here you will also find the highest mountain in the Algarve: Fóia, which is 902 meters high. From the top you have a fantastic view.
