Houses Aljezur

Aljezur is both a region and a city in the Algarve. The municipality has a total area of 323 km2 and has about 5000 inhabitants. The region is located on the far west side of the Algarve, north of Vila do Bispo. The most important places are Odeceixe and Aljezur.

The rich history of Aljezur

Aljezur was founded in the tenth century by the Moors, who stayed here for five centuries. Various remains of this can still be found, including the castle, the water cellar, and place names, old stories and fables. Another important event was in the 18th century at the outbreak of malaria where the town of Aljezur was hit hard, the Bishop of the Algarve wanted to protect the population and moved them to the other side of the river, where a "new" town was created. . However, many people also stayed behind in the old town; hence Aljezur is now a city with two halves. And that actually applies to this region. It has two faces.

On the one hand the rugged coast with the most beautiful cliffs between small and quiet sandy beaches. On the other side the interior, which is largely a protected nature reserve and where time has stood still.

Sights of Aljezur

The town of Aljezur is worth it to take a stroll through. The town is divided into two parts, which is nice to see. The picturesque white houses on the river are a beautiful setting for a walk through this old village.

Castle of Aljezur has been largely destroyed but the ruins can still be visited. It is worth a visit, especially because of the beautiful views.

A tour along the wild west coast is also well worth it. In the nature reserve there are a number of beautiful small beaches between the rocks that cannot be reached just like that. They are therefore extra quiet and beautiful. Book a tour and let local guides show you the most beautiful places in the region.

Enjoy the Beach

Perhaps the biggest draw of this region is its beautiful beaches. Some of these beautiful beaches have been highlighted;

Praia da Arrifana; this is the most famous beach in the Aljezur region. Beautiful long sandy beach that is also popular with surfers. It is quieter than the beaches in the touristic parts of the Algarve and is hidden between the cliffs

Praia Da Amoreira; is another example of such a beautiful beach on this coast. Situated between the cliffs, this beach continues in a small river inland.

Praia de Odeceixe is such a pearl that is absolutely worth a visit. Sheltered at the mouth of the Ribeira de Seixe river. Praia de Odeceixe is located in the Natural Park Parque Natural do Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina.

As mentioned, there are many more beautiful beaches to discover in the region.

During a holiday to Aljezur you can enjoy the many sights, surrounding nature, many beaches and delicious food. Book a holiday home in or near Aljezur!
