Houses Silves

Silves is both a region and a city in the Algarve. The municipality has a total area of 679 km2 and approximately 35,000 inhabitants. The Silves Region is centrally located in the Algarve between the provinces of Lagao and Albufeira. The region runs a long way inland from the coast. The main cities are Armação de Pêra and Silves.

The rich history of Silves

Silves is the oldest town in the Algarve. The fortress towers high above the city. The city flourished under Moorish rule. In 966 the city was sacked by Harald I of Denmark. In the 11th and 12th centuries the city was the independent taifa of Silves. The city was an important economic and cultural center and had more than 30,000 inhabitants. Today the fortress is an important tourist attraction, as well as navigating the old trade route across the Rio Arade to Portimão.

A different story is for Armação de Pêra, this originally fishing village owes its expansion mainly to the increasing tourism in the Algarve.

Sights Silves

Castelo dos Mouros
Silves Castle. Actually, you cannot ignore this, as soon as you enter Silves you will see the enormous castle appear. It is an iconic red sandstone structure built by the Moors at the highest point in the city. For the Moors it was the most important defense work for this important city. The literal translation of Castelo dos Mouros is Castle of the Moors.

In Silves, just like in Vila Real de Santo António, the Feira Medieval is celebrated. Concerts are then organized around the castle and during the day there are all kinds of stalls around the castle. This medieval festival is also popular among the locals. If you are in the Algarve in August, this is a must.

Sé Cathedral is also worth a visit in Silves. Good to combine with a walk through this beautiful old town.

Trade route on the Rio Arade this historically important route can be viewed on foot or by boat. It is wonderful to walk along the banks of the Rio Arade and enjoy all the beauty you encounter. Another option is the boat trip. The advantage of the boat trip is that a guide can tell you the history of this route.

Nossa Senhora da Rocha Beach
The beaches can be busy in the summer months. Everyone is looking for the most beautiful beaches hidden between the beautiful cliffs and this is such a pearl in our opinion. Definitely worth a visit.

Pescadores Beach
Is the beach on the boulevard where, in addition to an elongated sandy beach, many restaurants and bars can be found.

Praia grande de Pera is one of the largest and most elongated sandy beaches in the Algarve close to the center of Armação de Pêra. Easily accessible
