Portimão is both a city and municipality in the Algarve. The municipality has a total area of 182 km2 and has approximately 45,000 inhabitants. Portimão is centrally located in the west side of the Algarve. The main cities in Portimão are Alvor and Portimão.

The rich history of Portimão

Portimão is one of the older cities of the Algarve. Much destroyed by earthquake of 1755 that caused widespread damage in the Algarve. Portimão was then left a little to its own devices and only really recovered after it was granted city rights in 1924. Tourism has been the driving force behind the development of Portimão for the past three decades, which today prides itself on being the second most populous city in the Algarve.

Alvor is also an old city and a port city for a day. Nowadays also a popular destination for tourists who know how to find this nice spot. Praia de Alvor is one of the longest sandy beaches in the Algarve.

The Algarve Formula 1 circuit is located in Portimão. In 2020, after a very long period, there was another Grand Prix here. The 2020 Grand Prix was won by Lewis Hamilton.

Museu de Portimão
Portimão is also called the capital of the sardines. The history of fishing that has been so important to this region can be found in this nice museum. The building is one of the factories converted into a museum, there is even a former production line. In 2010 they received the Museum of the Year Award from the Council of Europe. You will find the museum on the Ribeirinha boulevard near the old center.
