Houses Monchique

Monchique is both a town and a municipality in the Algarve. The municipality has a total area of 396 km2 and approximately 7,000 inhabitants. The municipality is situated in the west of the Algarve, north of Portimão. The main town of Monchique is the town of the same name. It is one of the highest villages in Portugal situated in the mountains. With its natural spring, it is especially known as a wellness resort.

The rich history of Monchique

The municipality was already visited by the Romans. The Romans came to the municipality for the Caldas de Monchique, attracted by the healing power of its waters. Through the centuries thereafter, the mountain was slowly populated. Nowadays, Monchique is still known for these springs and tourists like to visit the village and the region every year for an active holiday. The surroundings are beautiful for nice walks or to discover by bike.

Caldas de Monchique

Caldas de Monchique is located near the village Monchique. This is the place where the Romans discovered the healing spring water from the mountains. The spring water comes here with a temperature between 27 and 31 garden Celsius out of the mountain. It is said that it is very healthy for the body. Especially people with muscle and bowel complaints come to this place.

Mount Foia

Mount Foia is the highest point of the Algarve. From this point you have a phenomenal view of the Algarve and the Ocean. On clear days you can even see Lisbon on the other side. The view is particularly beautiful. For the more active, several walks start from this highest point through the beautiful surroundings on top of the mountain. This place is fantastic to watch the sunrise or sunset.

Alferce is a beautiful village that is absolutely worth a visit. For example, with a beautiful walk from Monchique. In Alferce, you will find beautiful decorations with Azulejos (Azulejos are the well-known Portuguese decorative tiles).

Aguardente de Medronhos

Aguardente de Medronhos or simply medronho is a distilled drink from Portugal, made from the fruits of the strawberry tree. These trees grow wild on the poor soils of the Alentejo and Algarve. Visit one of the local makers of the Medronho. Make sure you agree on beforehand who is driving back.
