Houses Loulé

Loulé is both, a city and a municipality in the Algarve. The municipality has a total area of 765 km2 and has about 60,000 inhabitants. In 1988 the place received city rights. The most important cities in Loulé are Quarteira, Vilamoura and Loulé.

The rich history of Loulé

Loulé is one of the oldest towns in the Algarve and fulfils a central function for the surrounding towns. It was founded by the Moors and these influences can still be seen in the narrow streets of the city. Everywhere the beautiful characteristic white houses and old baths and city walls from that time can be found. The market hall, which dates from 1908, was designed in oriental style by architect Alfredo Campos Costa. It is still in use today and is one of the main attractions.

There are also many handicraft companies that produce leather, pottery and copper pans (cataplana pans), among other things. The castle (Castelo de Loulé), probably built by the Muslims, was rebuilt after the conquest in 1249.
