Houses Faro

One of the most well-known cities in the Algarve is of course Faro, the capital city. The city is ideal for a city-trip, but is also a must visit when staying in the Algarve longer. The city has a unique location at the ocean and the nature reserve Ria Formosa.

Faro has a nice ambiance, with charming streets and beautiful buildings. You will find a large number of restaurants in both the centre and the suburbs. The city has a very rich history, because the city already existed in Prehistoric Times and was an important port city during the Romans.

Sights in Faro

The old town is surrounded by high city walls dating back to the Middle Ages. There are several entrance gates, such as the Arco do Repouso. Behind the gates you will find clinker bricks and beautiful white houses. From the Ria Formosa Natural Park, some storks have settled in the city, so don't forget to look up!

Cathedral Sé de Faro is a major eye-catcher of the city. It is a Roman Catholic cathedral and is located in Largo da Sé square. The cathedral was originally built as a church of St. Mary, and was only later made a cathedral. It is open to the public, and you can, for example, climb the clock tower, from which you have a beautiful view over the city, Ria Formosa and the airport.

Of course, the part of Faro around the marina should not be missed when visiting the city. Especially at night it is wonderful to stroll along the boulevard. Settle down on the roof terrace of Hotel Faro & Beach Club, where you can enjoy a beautiful view. Various boat excursions depart from the harbor with which you can spot dolphins or discover nature park Ria Formosa by boat.

You can go shopping in the Forum Algarve shopping center, which is just outside the city. Here you will find all major store brands, interspersed with different restaurants. Enough choice for a wonderful day out!

Ria Formosa

It has been mentioned a few times now, Ria Formosa. It is a nature park with an ecosystem very similar to the Wadden Sea Region in the Netherlands. The park consists of a labyrinth of canals, islands and sandbanks, and stretches for 60 km along the Algarve coast. The park is of great importance for migratory birds, and a breeding area for many bird species. It is especially interesting to visit the park in March / April and September (the trekking times). In winter you can even spot flamingos! Very special are the colony of about 2 million seahorses and the presence of the chameleon. The best thing to do is to start at the information center, where they can inform you about which trails and observation points are good to visit at that time.

Faro Airport

Faro Airport can be seen as the gateway to the Algarve. It is a large airport to which several airlines fly from the Netherlands: Transavia, Easyjet and RyanAir. The center of Faro is only a 10 minute drive from the airport. At the airport itself you will find various services, including extensive carrental options.
