Houses Algarve-Oost

By the Algarve East we mean the stretch of the Algarve east of Faro to the Spanish border river Guadiana. These include Faro, Olhao, Tavira, Fuseta, Cacela Velha, Monte Gordo & Castro Marim. The east coast of the Algarve is less discovered and is characterized by authentic places and unlike the west side of the Algarve, the coast here is characterized by the lagoon and not the high cliffs.

Beaches and islands

Highly recommended are the islands and beaches with the azure blue sea in the Ria Formosa. Along the coast you will find the islands of Ilha da Barreta, Ilha da Culatra, Ilha da Armona, Ilha de Tavira and Ilha de Cabanas and a few smaller islands with beautiful long sandy beaches and restaurants with fresh fish. To some islands you can sail by ferry and other islands you reach via a footbridge.

From Praia Manta Rota you will find one of the longest sandy beaches of about 12 km all the way to the Guadiana river. With Praia Verde (green beach) where the forest with pine trees that is higher situated, flows into the beach.

Olhao & Tavira

On the east side of the Algarve you will find typical Portuguese fishing villages such as Fuseta, Olhão and Santa Luzia. Feel the atmosphere and eat fresh fish at the restaurants in the harbor and market halls. The fish market in Olhao is one of the highlights of the Algarve, especially on Saturdays this is a must. Tavira is one of the prettiest towns in the Algarve with its Moorish and Roman influences. Enjoy here on the terrace by the river.

Faro

Faro, the largest city in the Algarve, is more than the airport and the capital of the Algarve. It has a rich history and is certainly worth a visit. It is small enough to explore the center on foot and not overcrowded with tourists.

Ria Formosa

Ria Formosa

The Ria Formosa is a rich collection of beautiful sand islands, canals, lagoons, salt pans and sandbanks and runs for no less than 60 km along the coast of the Algarve, between the beaches of Praia do Garrão and Praia da Manta Rota. It makes it extra special that it looks completely different in times of low or high tide. It is a breeding ground for many bird species such as the flamingo, stork and spoonbill and is of great importance for migratory birds.
