Today's section "my favorite restaurants in the Algarve" features Restaurant Don Sebastião, one of the best (and in my opinion the nicest) restaurant in Lagos. The Don Sebastião restaurant opened its doors in the historic center of Lagos in May 1979. Many of the guests from the very beginning still come here. Our first tip is therefore to book a table in advance, especially in high season.
What do we order?
As soon as you step into Restaurant Don Sebastião you feel the authenticity of this place. You will be warmly welcomed and we prefer to start with a few pintxos (tapas) and a glass of wine. You can take an evening out for the wine list alone. More than 240 mainly local wines can be found here. Let us advise you for the tastiest “Vinho Verde” from the region.
We order a cataplana as a main course. A typical Portuguese dish that is prepared in a copper pan. There are different types of cataplanas with both fish and meat (and often combined). Tonight we go for the cataplana de Ameijoas e Camarão with shrimps and cockles. This version of the cataplana is slightly lighter and we like to have a little space left for dessert.
The dessert menu includes many local sweets typical of the Algarve, such as Dom Rodrigo, Morgado da Serra or carob pie. Tonight we opted for the Dom Rodrigo and the Morgado da Serra, both of which are egg yolk-based desserts. You will find many of these in the Algarve, the cakes are often combined with almonds. We take a new look at the wine list to order a suitable port. The menu contains more than 75 (!) Types of port. If you show an interest in the local wines, you may just be invited to take a look at the spectacular wine cellar of Restaurant Don Sebastião.
The evening ends here with a cup of coffee (bica). The coffee comes with a large basket of almonds, which you have to open yourself with a nutcracker.
Lunch & Dinner at restaurant Don Sebastião
Restaurant Don Sebastião is suitable for both lunch and dinner. It is a restaurant with a traditional interior and a lot of history. They cook with lots of fresh and local ingredients. The fresh fish is still presented at the table. We certainly recommend eating here and ordering local dishes as much as possible. Have you become curious about the rest of the menu?
